Dog Race

Type the names, press Start and let the dogs decide. The finishing order is drawn fairly before the traps open; the race just shows it.

Dogs are in the traps.

Each racer gets its own icon. To choose one, start the line with an emoji, e.g. 🍕 Alex. Excel, CSV and Word lists can be pasted or dropped on the box.

Use {name}, {icon} and {n} (number of racers).

A dog race is a random name picker run as a greyhound sprint. Every name becomes a dog in a numbered racing jacket, in its own lane on a sand track. After the countdown the traps open, the dogs gallop toward the finish, the lead changes a few times, and the first dog across the line wins. Second and third place go on a podium and the full order is listed below.

It works well on a classroom projector, in a team call or on a stream for giveaways. Up to 60 dogs can run at once. With long lists the lanes get thinner, so for big groups run a few heats and then a final.

How to run a dog race

Is the dog race fair?

Yes. When you press Start, the page shuffles the dogs with your browser's crypto.getRandomValues, which gives every finishing order the same chance. That shuffle is the result. Each dog then gets its own speed curve with surges and slower moments, tuned so it hits the line at its assigned moment.

So the lead changes are animation only, and nothing during the race, such as resizing the window, can change who wins. Your list stays in your browser and is never uploaded.

Frequently asked questions

How many dogs can race at once?

Up to 60. Each dog runs in its own lane, so with very long lists the dogs and name tags get smaller. For a big group, a few heats are easier to follow.

Do the dog's coat or jacket number change the odds?

No. Coat colours and jacket numbers are decoration. The finishing order is drawn before the start, and every order is equally likely.

Does the race make sound?

Yes: countdown beeps, a bell and a bark when the traps open, the odd bark during the race and a fanfare for the winner. The sounds are generated in the browser and can be switched off in the race settings.

Can a dog win twice in a row?

Yes, every race is a new draw. Tick Remove winner after race to take the winner off the list for the next one.
