A snail race is a random name picker for when you want a laugh as well as an answer. Every name becomes a garden snail with its own coloured shell, set in a lane on a soil path. The course is a whole metre long, which is a serious distance for a snail. They creep forward, stall, catch up and leave shiny slime trails behind them until one shell crosses the line first.
Because the pace is so slow, the race builds a lot of suspense out of very little, which works well with younger kids, at a family table or as a short break in a long meeting. Up to 60 snails can race. You still get a podium for the top three and the full finishing order when the last snail arrives.
How to run a snail race
- Type or paste the names, one per line. Each line is one snail with its own shell colour.
- Pick a race length. Short takes about 10 seconds; Epic stretches the crawl to about a minute.
- Press Start race and watch the slime trails grow. The view follows the snail in front.
- When every snail has crossed the line, check the podium and the full order, then copy the results or race again.
Is the snail race fair?
Yes. When you press Start, the page shuffles the names with your browser's crypto.getRandomValues, which gives every finishing order the same chance. That shuffle decides the result before any snail moves. Each snail then gets a speed curve with little spurts and long pauses, tuned so it reaches the line at its assigned moment.
So a snail that dawdles at the start can still win, and one that races ahead can still come last, but none of that is decided during the race. Shell colours mean nothing, and your list never leaves your browser.
Ideas for snail races
- Pick who gets the last slice of cake or the front seat in the car.
- Choose a reading buddy or a line leader in class.
- Draw a winner for a small prize at a garden party or picnic.
- Run a slow-motion final on Epic length for the heat winners of a bigger draw.
Frequently asked questions
Why is the race only one metre long?
It is a snail race, so a metre is a long way. The distance is just for fun. The race still takes as long as the length you pick, from about 10 seconds on Short to about a minute on Epic.
Can I choose the icon next to each name?
Yes. Every racer gets its own emoji icon, and the same name keeps the same icon. To pick one yourself, start the line with an emoji, such as "🍓 Mia". You can also switch the icon set to animals, food, sports, numbers or none.
Does the snail race make sound?
Yes, it plays countdown beeps, a soft boing now and then as the snails inch along, and a fanfare for the winner. Everything is generated in the browser, and sound can be turned off in the race settings.
Can a snail win twice in a row?
It can, since each race is a fresh draw. Tick Remove winner after race if you want the winning name taken off the list before the next one.
