A penguin race is a random name picker on the ice. Every name becomes a penguin in a coloured scarf, standing in its own lane on a frozen course 50 metres long. When the race begins they waddle as fast as their short legs allow, wobbling side to side and throwing up little sprays of snow, with a squeak here and there. The first penguin over the line wins.
It is a good pick for winter parties, holiday class activities or a team call in December. Full-screen mode makes the ice fill a projector or TV, and you can start the race with the keyboard. Up to 60 penguins can line up, and you choose which effects play: sound, confetti, commentary and the winner pop-up each have their own switch.
How to run a penguin race
- Type or paste the names, one per line. Each line is one penguin with its own scarf.
- Pick a race length: Short is about 10 seconds, Normal about 20, Long about 35 and Epic about a minute.
- Press Full screen, then press Space or Enter to start. Press Esc when you want to leave full screen.
- After the finish, read the podium and the full order, then copy the results or race again.
Is the penguin race fair?
Yes. As soon as the race starts, the page shuffles the names with your browser's crypto.getRandomValues, so every finishing order is equally likely. That shuffle is the result. Each penguin then gets its own speed curve, with quick shuffles and slower wobbles, tuned so it reaches the line at its assigned moment.
A penguin that slips behind early has the same chance as one that leads. Scarf colour and lane do not matter, and nothing during the race, including going in or out of full screen, changes the outcome. Your list stays in your browser and is never uploaded.
Ideas for penguin races
- Draw names for a Secret Santa or a holiday gift swap.
- Pick who opens the first present or who chooses the next carol.
- Run a quiet race in a library or late in the day: turn sound off but keep the confetti.
- Turn on commentary for a stream so viewers can follow the lead changes.
Frequently asked questions
Can I turn off the sound or the confetti?
Yes. Sound, confetti, commentary and the winner pop-up each have their own toggle in the race settings, so you can keep the squeaks and drop the confetti, or race in complete silence.
What keys work in full-screen mode?
Press Space or Enter to start the race and Esc to leave full screen. That makes it easy to run from a keyboard while the race is on a projector or a shared screen.
How many penguins can race at once?
Up to 60, each in its own lane. With a long list the penguins and name tags get smaller. For a big group, a few heats of 10 to 15 are easier to watch, followed by a final.
Can a penguin win twice in a row?
Yes, every race is a fresh draw, so the same name can come first again. Tick Remove winner after race and the winning name is taken off the list automatically.
