A turtle race is a random name picker set on a sunny beach. Each name becomes a turtle with a coloured shell, waddling in its own lane across the sand toward a finish line 50 metres away. Turtles are not quick, so the field stays close and the lead keeps changing until one of them noses over the line. The top three go on a podium and everyone else gets a place in the full finishing order.
It is a calm, friendly way to pick a name in a classroom, at a summer camp or during a family video call. Up to 60 turtles can race. If your names already sit in a spreadsheet or a class list, you can bring them in from a file instead of typing them out.
How to run a turtle race
- Add the names, one per line, or import them from a file. Each line is one turtle.
- Choose a race length from Short, about 10 seconds, up to Epic, about a minute.
- Press Start race. After the countdown the turtles set off and the view follows the one in front.
- When the last turtle finishes, read the podium and the full order, copy the results, or race again.
Is the turtle race fair?
Yes. As soon as you press Start, the page shuffles the turtles with your browser's crypto.getRandomValues, giving every finishing order an equal chance. That shuffle is the answer. Each turtle then gets its own pace, with short bursts and slow patches, tuned so it crosses the line at its assigned moment.
The waddling is animation only. Lane position and shell colour make no difference, and nothing that happens on screen during the race can change the result. Your list stays in your browser and is not uploaded.
Ideas for turtle races
- Pick which group shares first after a class activity.
- Choose the camp cabin that eats first or gets the first swim slot.
- Draw names for a classroom job chart, with Remove winner on so nobody gets two jobs.
- Use the beach scene for a summer party raffle, or switch the scenery to snow or Halloween to match the season.
Frequently asked questions
Can I import names from Excel or Google Sheets?
Yes. You can load names from an Excel (.xlsx), CSV, Word or text file, or copy a column in Google Sheets and paste it. Each row becomes one turtle. Check the list before you race and remove any header row.
How many turtles can race at once?
Up to 60. Every turtle has its own lane, so on a long list the turtles and name tags get smaller. For a large group, run a few heats and then a final with the heat winners.
Can I change the beach scenery?
Yes. There are 12 scenery themes, from sunny day and sunset to snow, night, desert, Halloween, Christmas and candy. The theme changes how the race looks, not who wins.
Can a turtle win twice in a row?
Yes, every race is a new draw. Tick Remove winner after race and the winning name is taken off the list automatically.
